Comment about Christmas 2005 from Al (and Neil and Kev) , UK. "The three of us agreed that the highlight of our trip to Thailand was at Chiang Dao Nest, the 3 day trek, and how can I ever forget White Water Rafting on Xmas day! The atmosphere, hospitality and friendliness of the Nest was excellent. Wicha's cooking was superb, the meal on Xmas day was the best christmas dinner I have ever eaten. (I didn't tell my mother that!) "

Some foreigners might think that Thailand is a Christian country when they see all the Christmas decorations, but really we are not. Ninety-five percent of Thai people are Buddhist and Buddhism is our country’s religion. But in Thailand, there is a small percent of people who are Christian and Muslim. Even though most of us are Buddhist we celebrate Christmas day because Thai people like to have fun and we are open and friendly towards other religions.

On Christmas Day, I didn't have a good day because I had to study books to get ready for my exam which started on Xmas day. Also, at my school we didn't have any party, we did it almost the same as a normal day. But at my old school, there was a fun party that happened. In the early morning when the kids got to school they met 2 Santa Clauses waiting by the gate. And when they walked in a bit they met lots of little angles giving some candies to the students. And in the playground there was a Christmas Tree with lots of presents. During the assembly, students sang Christmas songs and watched a play about Mary and Joseph. Really, we don't celebrate Christmas like Western countries. This is because 95% of Thai people are Buddhists. We just like having fun. So, that is why we sometimes celebrate festivals from other countries.

It's not that Bangkok is totally remiss when it comes to Christmas. In fact, the merchants have discovered the retail advantages of yet another shopper's holiday, and the manager of our small hotel and the owner of our favorite cafe both put up plastic Christmas trees, decorated with tinsel and lights and smiled a lot on Christmas Eve in an effort to make us feel less homesick. more ...
